Caption: William E. Ehrich, born in Germany in 1897, came to this country in 1929. He taught sculpture at the Art Institute of Buffalo, and directed the Federal Art Project there. He was on the faculty at the University of Rochester for over 20 years and taught at Memorial Art Gallery. He also created the George Eastman Memorial on the quadrangle at the U of R.

The sculpture commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johan Wolfgang von Goethe, a German poet, philosopher, and author who spent 58 years writing "'Faust', a book about a character who pledges his soul to the devil in return for all knowledge and experience."
