Balance by Juan Carlos Caballero-Perez

Location: Flatiron Building, 706 University Avenue
Rochester, NY (view Google map)
Material: Steel
Dated: 2002

Description: Soaring steel sculpture with elements balanced at the top

Caption: "In creating this piece, I began by considering the role of Civil Engineers," said Caballero who is an Assistant Professor of Metals at RIT. "They are responsible for the quality and safety of the structures where we live and work. This sculpture, with its directional flow and mix of geometric and curvilinear forms takes shape from both the Canal and the Highway Systems. It speaks of movement, yet solidly stands in one place. It blends the shapes of nature with the solidity of material. The way the forms balance and support the circle represents the ultimate consideration for all Civil Engineers of balancing nature and engineering, aesthetics and safety, necessity and well-being."
