Description: A stone a pick suspended in a frame structure
Caption: "The metaphor of history and the relationship of
mankind to its tools is central to much of my work. I'm
fascinated with the object that was previously used, the
history it carries with it, the texture of use and age and
its continued relevance," says Spencer. "ADZ/PICK"
represents Spencer's interpretation of that relationship
making reference to two tools, the adz and pick, both
used extensively in the construction of the Erie Canal.
"The old and the new, past and present, warm and cold
surfaces, these are characteristics that appeal to me."
says Spencer. They also are the themes that run through
Spencer's various works of art. "The work defines the
relationship among past, present, and future, a relationship
of control balanced with spontaneity," he says."
